Chris Pratt says that he hopes the upcoming sequel to last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” could mark the start of a whole Nintendo Cinematic Universe.
In March, Universal announced a sequel is officially a go with an April 3rd 2026 release being targeted. That followed on from last year when “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” helmer Wes Ball was set to direct a live-action “The Legend of Zelda” film.
It marks a big switch for Nintendo, which didn’t allow big screen adaptations of its properties for decades until last year’s animated ‘Mario’ film from Illumination and Universal.
Now, in a recent interview with ScreenRant, Pratt says he’s genuinely excited to see this world expanded out on the big screen:
“Oh, man! There’s so much to explore. There are decades worth of [games] to explore, not only with Mario and Peach and Donkey Kong and Luigi and Bowser and Yoshi; that was teased at the end.
But it just gets me so excited. I was such a Nintendo head growing up, so just thinking about how everything from Legend of Zelda to the entire Nintendo Cinematic Universe could be created and what that could look like for all of these characters that I love? I mean, there’s really no limit. We could talk about it for hours.”
Specifics of what’s to come in the next “Mario” film are under wraps, but many eyes are on it after the first overcame soft reviews to pull in over $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office off of an estimated budget of $100 million.
Nintendo already crosses over its characters in the “Super Smash Bros.” games which see the various Mario & Zelda characters mixing with other iconic Nintendo franchises like Donkey Kong, Metroid, Kirby and Star Fox.
