Marvel’s “Daredevil” returns next year, an event which will see Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio’s characters finally headlining an actual “Daredevil” series again more than six years after the Netflix series ended in October 2018.
In a newly published interview with TV Insider the pair from the Disney Upfront presentation in New York City this past week, the actors discussed the creative overhaul of the series.
That overhaul, decided upon after the production shut down due to the writers and actors strikes, saw it change from a planned 18-episode lighter series with little connection to the original Netflix show, to a darker 9-episode series with deep ties to it.
Cox confirms there is “a lot” of crossover, D’Onofrio adding: “It originally wasn’t going to be at all, but now it’s a lot.” Asked what led to that reversal, Cox says:
“I think [it’s] the fans. I think [it’s] the studio as well. That’s a really fine balance to strike. If you’re going to remake a show and call it Season 1 and it was a successful show and it was kind of beloved, then you’ve got to do what people liked.
But also you’ve got to have a reason for remaking it. So you have to change it up a bit. And that’s just a really fine balance to find. think that they’ve done a beautiful job doing that. And hopefully, the old fans – the O.G.s – will love it and also, we’ll maybe pick up a few more fans on the way.”
Original series stars Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Ayelet Zurer, and Jon Bernthal are reprising their roles for the series with vigilante lawyer Matt Murdock/Daredevil once again taking on crime boss Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.
D’Onofrio also spoke about hsi working relationship with Cox, saying:
“It’s fun. The best thing about it is that we like each other and we appreciate each other’s work. It turns out we have the same kind of sensibility when it comes to scripts and getting things done. It’s great. We couldn’t ask for more, actually, to tell you the truth.”
Cox adds: “Yeah, that makes it a lot easier. We agree on basically everything.”
“Daredevil: Born Again” is targeting a March 2025 airing.
