Hideaki Anno, the creator of the famed “Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise, has indicated that the celebrated title may return – and for the first time, someone else could be in charge.
In a recent interview with The Asahi Shimbun newspaper (via Anime News Network), Anno acknowledged that “there may be plans” for more in the franchise, and possibly with “someone other than [himself]” at the helm.
He indicates that person would receive a high degree of freedom, but says plans are not definitive as yet – all he can say now is he’s “not ruling out the possibility of future installments.”
The original Gainax series ran for 26 episodes from 1995-1996 and is set fifteen years after a worldwide cataclysm called the Second Impact, with the focus on the futuristic fortified city of Tokyo-3.
We follow Shinji Ikari, a teenage boy recruited by his father Gendo to the mysterious organization NERV to pilot a giant biomechanical mecha called an Evangelion and fight against the giant mosntrous beings known as Angels trying to cause more cataclysms.
The series famously goes very deep into not just psychoanalytical behavioral archetypes and themes of depression but various theologies from Christianity to Judaism, Shinto and Kabbalah. It was followed by two movies – “Death & Rebirth” and “The End of Evangelion” with the latter considered the show’s definitive end.
In 2007, Anno began work on Rebuild of Evangelion – a four film saga reimagining the story and crafting an all new interpretation of it on a larger scale with those films running from 2007-2021.
“Evangelion” received universal critical acclaim and remains widely considered one of the greatest anime works of all time. The full 26-episode series is available on Netflix along with the earlier two films. The ‘Rebuild’ films are on Amazon Prime Video.
