The Square and Triangle of Sadness filmmaker Ruben Östlund has already started spinning up his next social satire. The production has purchased a recently retired Boeing 747 for the movie. Why?

The Entertainment System Is Down follows the passengers on a long-haul flight where the entertainment system has failed, forcing the passengers to face the dreaded horror of being bored.

According to the report in Screen Daily, the film is inspired by a social psychological study at Virginia University which revealed participants did not enjoy spending as little as 6-15 minutes in a room by themselves with nothing to do. In fact, according to the study, many participants preferred an electric shock to boredom.

As a father of two young children with a wife, I find this highly improbable. The idea of hours of peace and quiet, with nothing but my thoughts for company, sounds like absolute heaven to me. Also, does nobody read books anymore these days? Long-haul flights serve alcohol and my philosophy is that you can get through just about anything with enough booze.

Hours by myself with alcohol? Seriously, don’t threaten me with a good time.

Anyway, enough about me. What makes this even more interesting is the news that Keanu Reeves has joined the cast, alongside Kirsten Dunst and Daniel Brühl. Östlund is a two-time Palme d’Or winner. We are interested in where he goes with this.

Shooting starts in early 2025.
