The Emmys race for the year just got a major shake-up.
FX has confirmed it is working to renew its sweeping samurai epic “Shōgun” for not one but two additional seasons according to TV Line.
Series star Hiroyuki Sanada and showrunners Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo are on board to return for the new seasons, as is executive producer and original book author James Clavell’s daughter Michaela Clavell.
A writers room is currently being assembled and will begin work this summer. Because of this, “Shōgun” will be submitted as a drama series rather than a limited series for Emmy consideration this year.
Whereas the limited series category battle will be fierce, the drama series one is relatively light as perennial nominees like “Succession” and “Better Call Saul” are gone, and hot button ones like “The Last of Us” didn’t have new episodes in the qualifying year.
The series was always billed as a limited series at launch as the ten-episode season covers all of Clavell’s bestselling novel.
However Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga and executive produces, recently closed a deal to return if the show is renewed which led to such talk last week.
The first season of “Shōgun” is now available on Hulu in the U.S. and on Disney+ with Star in global territories.
