Reese Witherspoon and Amazon MGM Studios have announced “Elle,” a TV series prequel to the “Legally Blonde” film franchise that will stream on Amazon Prime.
The news was announced by studio chief Jennifer Salke, Witherspoon — and Bruiser the dog – at Amazon’s first-ever upfront presentation this morning.
The series, which has been in the works since early April, is described as an origin story of Elle Woods as a 1990s high schooler.
In the series we will learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love.
Laura Kittrell (“Insecure”) is the series creator and showunner. She also executive produces with Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, and Marc Platt. Witherspoon said in a statement:
“I truly couldn’t be more excited about this series!. Fans will get to know how Elle Woods navigated her world as a teenager with her distinct personality and ingenuity, in ways that only our beloved Elle could do. What could be better than that? I’m extremely grateful to the incredible teams at Prime Video and Hello Sunshine – along with our amazing writer Laura Kittrell – for making this dream of mine come true. Legally Blonde is back!”
No casting has taken place as yet. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine previously produced “Daisy Jones and the Six” for the streamer.
