By Netflix has announced an August 29th premiere date for the anime series “Terminator Zero” based on James Cameron’s legendary sci-fi film franchise.
In 2022 a future war has raged for decades between the few human survivors and an endless army of machines after the AI known as Skynet gained self-awareness and began its war against humanity in 1997.
Caught between the future and this past is a soldier sent back in time to change the fate of humanity. She arrives in Japan 1997 just prior to Judgement Day to protect a scientist named Malcolm Lee who works to launch a new AI system designed to compete with Skynet’s impending attack on humanity.
As Malcolm navigates the moral complexities of his creation, he is hunted by an unrelenting assassin from the future which forever alters the fate of his three children.
The series is created and executive produced by “The Batman Part II” scribe Mattson Tomlin, directed by Masahi Kudo, and executive produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger.
Tomlin tells EW that the show treats all the past films as canon, saying: “We’re not going to pretend that the third movie didn’t happen. We’re not going to pretend that the sixth movie didn’t happen.”
He also indicates plans to move away from the “muscular sci-fi action” of the latter films and embraced the horror elements of the Cameron movies.
Production IG Studios is handling the animation. All eight episodes will release on that date globally on the service with Tomlin indicating the hope is for multiple seasons.
