Out promoting “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth says he feels that it’s harsh when he sees major filmmakers making negative comments regarding the MCU.
Before the debate about ‘superhero fatigue’ led to ‘superhero fatigue discourse fatigue’, the talk about superhero movies and Marvel in particular was over famous filmmakers being dismissive of the genre.
Directors Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola, among others, gave their takes on the MCU that weren’t exactly kind. They dub them not cinema and ignited much message board and social media discourse.
For those working on the films, such as 40-year-old Hemsworth, it seemed overly harsh with Hemsworth standing up for Marvel movies and those who worked on them. He tells The Times:
“It felt harsh. And it bothers me, especially from heroes. It was an eye-roll for me, people bashing the superhero space. Those guys had films that didn’t work too – we all have.
When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, cool, tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong?
And cinema-going did not change because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media. Superhero films actually kept people in the cinemas during that transition and now people are coming back. So they deserve a little more appreciation.”
He also has more of an issue with actors who have appeared in the films but then have later been critical of starring in them, such as his “Thor” co-stars Idris Elba and Christian Bale.
Citing words of advice from an actor on his early Aussie soap days, he says:
“Nah. It’s, like, ‘They’re films that are successful — put me in one. Oh, mine didn’t work? I’ll bash them.’ Look, I grew up on a soap opera and it used to bother me when actors would later talk about the show with guilt or shame. Humility goes a long way.
One of the older actors on ‘Home and Away’ said, ‘We don’t get paid to make the good lines sound good, but to make the bad ones work.’ That stuck with me.”
Hemsworth will shortly be seen as Warlord Dementus in George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” which opens everywhere next week.
