Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and acclaimed British actor Tom Hardy are in talks to star in the crime thriller “77 Blackout” which Black Bear will introduce to buyers at the Cannes market.
“No Time to Die” and “True Detective” first season helmer Cary Joji Fukunaga is directing the project from a script by Frank John Hughes. Fukunaga also did revisions to the script.
Set in 1977, five rogue police officers formulate a plan to rob three criminal strongholds – the Hong Kong Triads, the Italian Mafia, and the Harlem Mob – all in one night.
When a blackout sweeps the city the night of the robbery, the crew is forced to navigate a hellish landscape as years of being overworked and underpaid forces each of them to confront their own morality.
Ali plays Ray Butler whilst Hardy plays Eddie Boyle. Charles Roven, Madison Weireter, William Green and Aaron Ginsburg will produce for their Atlas Entertainment and The Cut labels.
