Ahead of the film’s release, filmmaker George Miller has confirmed that his lead actress Anya Taylor-Joy only has around 30 lines in her title role in the film “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”.
The reveal comes as part of an extensive interview with The Telegraph that Miller did looking back on the difficult production of ‘Fury Road’ and how “Furiosa” offered different challenges.
Miller puts the reasoning for the lack of dialogue down to the simplest of them all – pacing. He believes movies should be fast and dialogue just slows them down.
Miller also reflected back on the ‘feud’ between Fury Road co-stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy and how their differing approaches to performing clashed:
“They were just two very different performers. Tom has a damage to him but also a brilliance that comes with it, and whatever was going on with him at the time, he had to be coaxed out of his trailer.
Whereas Charlize was incredibly disciplined – a dancer by training, which told in the precision of her performance – and always the first one on set.
I’m an optimist, so I saw their behavior as mirroring their characters, where they had to learn to cooperate in order to ensure mutual survival.”
Either way, when it came time to “Furiosa” he made sure to sit down with Taylor-Joy and co-star Chris Hemsworth to ensure a calm shoot wss maintained:
“You have to be obsessive about safety – physical safety, as the shoot goes on and fatigue sets in, but also psychological safety.”
The two-and-a-half hour movie has its official premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this coming week and opens everywhere on May 23rd.
