When Steve McQueen died 44 years ago, he left something behind. Two trunks, containing a selection of his notebooks and some unmade scripts. One of these was a passion project of his that he had hoped to take the lead role in – Yucatan.

Over the years, many have tried to get the project off the ground. About a decade ago, Oscar-nominated writer Terry Rossio (Pirates Of The Caribbean) was writing the latest script for Warner Bros. with Downey Jr set to star. He was the latest in a long line of writers to have tried to take very detailed notes to full script. Paul Scheuring and Anthony Peckham also took a run at it at various stages.

The project then stalled again. Now it has been resurrected yet again, and Deadline are reporting on it.

This time Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Blue Beetle, Miss Bala) is screenwriting for Team Downey Productions under Downey and his wife, Susan.

The story follows a renegade salvage expert’s search for Mayan treasure in the Yucatan Peninsula. The Rossio version was to use this as the jumping-off point for a mind-bending swashbuckler.

Whether this new version will follow that plan, or do something different, remains to be seen. Downey Jr. is not currently cast in this version, but he may step up from producing to lead as well.
