Dave Callaham, writer of Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” is returning to the Monsterverse.
Callaham has come onboard to write the next installment of Legendary’s Godzilla/Kong franchise. Callaham previously wrote the early drafts and received a story by credit for the film that began the franchise – 2014’s “Godzilla”.
The hire comes in the wake of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ which has made nearly $555 million worldwide – the biggest of the franchise since “Kong: Skull Island” scored $568 million in 2017.
However, it will likely end up being the most profitable because the film was made on a tight budget in comparison to the others – just $135 million (the others were closer to $200 million).
It’s likely they will try and stick with that formula for the next one. Adam Wingard created the story ‘New Empire’ alongside Simon Barrett and Terry Rossio who wrote it.
Legendary has indicated it would like to see Wingard return to the director’s chair, but he has no deal in place and is set to shoot “Onslaught” this fall for A24 before taking on any other films.
The five movies have collectively earned $2.5 billion at the global box office, whilst spin-off series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” was a hit for Apple TV+ and is getting a second season.
