Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh is hitting a massive purple patch in her career. After snaring the gong for Everything, Everywhere, All At Once, and with roles in Star Trek: Section 31, Avatar sequels, and Wicked still to come, she is in demand.
One more to add to the list now. Yeoh will star in Blade Runner 2099, the television series follow up to Blade Runner 2049 coming to Amazon Prime Video.
Deadline reports that she is cast, while scooper DanielRPK says his sources tell him that the plot will follow two women. Cora is on the run and forced to adopt numerous identities, and a Blade Runner nearing her life’s end named Olwen. Together they are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses a threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.
Jonathan Van Tulleken, who directed the first two episodes of FX’s Shogun, is now confirmed as series director. Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) is the writer and showrunner, with Ridley Scott as executive producer.
It is not known if Yeho will play one of these roles, or if she will appear in another capacity.
The WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes meant production was delayed and shifted to Prague. It is now shooting.
Blade Runner was a box office disappointment that then found an audience and acceptance on home video before being eventually declared as a masterpiece.
The sequel, Blade Runner 2049, received acclaim from critics, who praised multiple aspects including cast performances, directing, cinematography, and faithfulness to the previous film. The accolades were heaped upon it, including Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects out of five nominations, and eight British Academy Film Awards nominations, winning for Best Cinematography and Best Special Visual Effects.
Despite this, it was one of the biggest box-office bombs of the year eventually racking up a reported loss of $80 million for the studio.
