Back in February last year came the news that Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line were set to develop more live-action movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” books.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced during an investor call that it has closed a multi-year deal with rights holders Embracer Group AB that allowed them to develop the new films with the plan being to “honor the past, look to the future, and adhere to the strongest level of quality and production values”.
Now, as part of a Warner Bros. Discovery investor call this morning, the company has confirmed a 2026 release date for the first of these planned new films which will be titled “The Hunt for Gollum”.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav made the announcement in a post-earnings call and added that the project is in early stages of script development. Andy Serkis is confirmed to be returning to the role of Gollum and will also direct the project.
In addition, Zaslav indicates Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who were behind the original ‘Rings’ and ‘Hobbit’ trilogies, will produce and are said to be involved “every step of the way”.
The Jackson-directed trilogy released from 2001-03 earned a combined $2.9 billion at the box office. New Line will release a standalone animated feature, “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim,” later this year whilst the lavish Amazon Prime series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will release a second season later this year.
