Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh has reportedly been set to star in the “Blade Runner 2099” TV series currently in production at Amazon Prime Video reports Deadline.
The limited series marks the latest expansion of the franchise that began with Ridley Scott’s 1982 film adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and continued with Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 film “Blade Runner 2049”.
Whilst plot specifics are under wraps, a report at DanielRPK claims the series will follow two women – Cora who is on the run and forced to adopt numerous identities, and a Blade Runner nearing her life’s end named Olwen. Together they are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses a threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.
Jonathan Van Tulleken, who directed the first two episodes of FX’s highly acclaimed “Shogun” series, was recently confirmed as director of this, replacing the previously linked Jeremy Podeswa (“Game of Thrones”).
Silka Luisa (“Shining Girls”) is the writer, creator and showrunner whilst Ridley Scott is listed as executive producer. Specifics of Yeoh’s role are under wraps.
Filming, originally scheduled for summer last year in Belfast but postponed due to the strikes, has been relocated to Prague and got underway this month.
Yeoh is coming off Netflix’s “The Brothers Sun” series and reprising her role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou in the upcoming “Star Trek: Section 31” film for the Paramount+ service. She also has key roles in the “Wicked” films and “Avatar” sequels coming up.
