A new report at The Insneider has gone into the development slate over at indie distribution darling A24 and the news is both good and bad.

The bad? The “Friday the 13th” prequel TV series “Crystal Lake” which had “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller attached to executive produce and was being made for streamer Peacock.

The report indicates A24 has pulled the plug on the project, first announced back in 2022, and adds that “it’s unclear whether this is a permanent decision or a temporary one”. A24 reportedly had no official comment.

Onto the nicer news and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners is reportedly teaming with the distributor on an adaptation of James McBride’s 2023 novel “The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store”.

The book tells the story of Black and Jewish residents of the Chicken Hill neighborhood of Pottstown, Pennsylvania in the 1920s and 1930s. A framing device takes place in 1972 tied to the discovery of a skeleton at the bottom of a well.

Celebrated playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins will adapt the script with Spielberg only attached to produce at this time.
