OK, I am a little bit excited by this news and I kinda don’t care how embarrassing that is. Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy will lead a new film adaptation of Enid Blyton’s classic children’s novel The Magic Faraway Tree.

When I was a very small boy, there were probably three books that really, really stood out in my childhood reading. Buried among The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn, Mr. Men, Where The Wild Things Are, Dr Seuss, and the Thomas The Tank Engine stories, those three books were Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, and The Magic Faraway Tree.

So the news that something pretty special from my childhood is to be adapted by the writer behind Paddington 2 and Wonka – Simon Farnaby – with some high-profile talent attached makes me happy.

The story will follow Polly (Foy) and Tim (Garfield) and their children Beth, Joe, and Fran – a modern family who find themselves forced to relocate to a new home in the remote English countryside. Next to their new home is a wood. Deep in this wood, a gigantic enchanted tree grows. It is wide enough to have small houses carved into its trunk, and its topmost branches reach the clouds.

The kids embark on a series of adventures with many of the magical residents of the tree, and in the mysterious lands reachable from the top of the tree.

Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Productions, Elysian Film Group, and Ashland Hill Media Finance are behind The Magic Faraway Tree, and it begins filming as early as next month.

Full casting is currently underway. Ben Gregor (Britannia, Cuckoo) directs. Pippa Harris, Nicolas Brown, Danny Perkins, and Jane Hooks produce.

The books were bestsellers for renowned children’s author Blyton. It has franchise potential, as there were four books in the series – The Enchanted Wood (1939), The Magic Faraway Tree (1943), The Folk of the Faraway Tree (1946), and Up the Faraway Tree (1951).
