We’ve yet to see any publicity material from the upcoming “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” film which wrapped filming a year ago in Bulgaria.
It appears the film’s production company Millennium Media has also employed some artificial intelligence to help out with one element – creature design.
Millennium’s president Jonathan Yunger spoke at a panel at the 74th annual Berlin International Film Festival two months ago, but his quotes have gone viral today.
According to MotionPictures.org, Yunger said he wasn’t a fan of A.I. images. However after they shot a demon character practically that “didn’t look great,” the report says Yunger turned to A.I. to come up with a new design via a platform he built himself.
Yunger reportedly said: “I was able to make 3000 creature designs in an hour. So now I can start to cherry-pick and edit those and then send it to visual effects.”
Yunger stresses that he doesn’t think A.I. will replace people, rather people who use it will replace those who don’t. The news follows in the wake of several other films of late employing the tech which has resulted in controversy and backlash.
Brian Taylor helms the film that unfolds in the 1950s as Hellboy (Jack Kesy) and a rookie BPRD agent, stranded in rural Appalachia, discover a small community haunted by witches led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past.
Mike Mignola, creator of the “Hellboy” comics, contributed to the screenplay for this which is rated R and aims for a darker tone than past efforts in the genre. No release date is yet set.
