We’re one-third of the way through 2024 and so far the U.S. domestic box-office sits at $2 billion – 21% behind 2023.
“The Fall Guy” is expected to launch to $30-35 million this Friday, kickstarting the Summer film season, but a new report at Deadline suggests the early May to late August frame will be lucky to hit $3 billion this year – down 27% from last Summer’s $4.09 billion.
What’s surprising, however, is the trade has suggested that the upcoming supernatural sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which opens in the first week after Summer in early September, could deliver a $100 million+ opening and potentially beat the $123 million opening of “IT” in 2017 in that same post-Labor Day weekend. Where they got the figure from is unclear and seems like a major stretch.
Analysts also indicate that May will be bereft of big openings with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” targeting $50 million, “IF” heading for just over $40 million, and both “Garfield” and “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” looking to come in at just over $30 million each for the four-day Memorial Day holiday.
Only three films this Summer seem guaranteed for $100 million or more starts – Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” and Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine”. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is expected to hit a $60 million start, on par with the 2020 third film, while “Twisters” is also expected to do well.
Uncertainties include Kevin Costner’s three-hour “Horizon: An American Saga,” the first of an overall four-film saga, which no-one knows what to expect. M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” and the prequel spin-off “A Quiet Place: Day One” could also surprise.
