Carla Gugino has been set to play Hollywood screen legend Vivien Leigh in the biopic “The Florist”.
Leigh earned a permanent place in cinema history for her role as Scarlett O’Hara in 1939’s “Gone With the Wind,” and cemented it with the role of Blanche DuBois in 1951’s “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
Here, the film will explore Leigh’s struggle with bipolar disorder in the 1960s as she prepares to lead the Broadway production of John Gielgud’s Chekhov adaptation of Anton Chekov’s “Ivanov”.
Leigh’s heart collides with Joseph Penn, a WWII veteran and blue-collar florist who encounters Leigh on a delivery. At the same time, she attends a local psychiatric facility for electroconvulsive therapy.
Jayce Bartok (“The Cake Eaters”) reportedly assembled the script with the help of a box of love letters. Nick Sandow directs.
Filming will begin at end of the summer in Philadelphia. Gugino is coming off acclaim for her work on Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” mini-series.
