For all the issues Disney has been having lately, both creatively and in the boardroom, one thing does still hold true. When they actually get it right, magic still happens. It is just a shame they have been getting it right so rarely lately. One place where they did get it right was with Moana.

Moana was a smash hit. It grossed $248.7 million in the U.S. and Canada, and $438.4 million in other countries, for a worldwide total of $687.2 million. It is pretty much universally praised with an approval rating of 96% based on 289 reviews and an average rating of 7.9/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.

And for good reason. It’s an excellent family movie and a great Disney effort, with good characters and a fun vocal cast on top of their game. It also surprised everyone by showing us that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could actually sing.

Now Johnson is back in the recording booth for Moana 2 and has shared some behind-the-scenes images from work on the sequel.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the movie in February and it has been on the fast track since then. It is said to feature a new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers after an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors sends Moana on a journey across the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters.

At the time it was speculated that neither Auli’i Cravalho or Johnson would return for Moana 2. Within a day, Johnson confirmed he was back whilst Cravalho was locked within weeks.

Johnson’s post says:

“So much fun becoming MAUI again – a character that changed my life in many ways – including the character of MAUI being inspired by my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia”.

Moana 2 is written and directed by David G. Derrick Jr. and set for release in United States on November 27th.
