By One thing you’re not short of online is conspiracy theories. Anything of note that has happened, chances are someone has come up with an overly elaborate and highly dubious explanation of what they think went down.
That includes the recasting of Superman with Henry Cavill exiting and making way for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe initiative with David Corenswet in the rebooted role.
“Castle” and “The Rookie” actor Nathan Fillion has a role as the Guy Gardener-version of Green Lantern in Gunn’s currently shooting “Superman” film. Recently, Fillion was quoted in an interview as saying Gunn told him at “The Suicide Squad” premiere in 2021 that he would would be cast as Gardener in a new “Superman” film.
The quote led to a ton of discussion online that suggested Gunn knew back in 2021 that he’d be taking over DC Studios even as he said in interviews around the time he wasn’t interested in running DC.
Gunn himself has now debunked the talk, saying on Threads that Fillion is getting their conversation mixed up – the actual conversation took place at the premiere party for Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” last year. That was well after Gunn and Safran took over DC.
Asked about the theory he was always planning on rebooting DC and making his own Superman movie when he first got hired, Gunn says:
“I don’t quite understand how that fits. Aside from the fact I had no interest in running DC until Peter decided to do it with me so he could do the exec stuff & I could focus on creative, when I was hired to write Superman it was always intended as & pitched as a new Superman story.
So why would I lie about not planning that at the Squad premiere which would have amounted to the same thing at the end of the day? How does this particular conspiracy theory make sense?”
Cavill last took on the Superman role in late 2022 for a cameo in “Black Adam”. At the time Cavill confirmed he would be returning as Superman in a new film. A month later however Gunn and Safran were announced as the new DC Studios chief and revealed their plan to reboot that universe.
“Superman” will open in cinemas on July 11th 2025.
