Just days before they announce their Fall line-up, CBS has confirmed that they have cancelled their “NCIS: Hawai’i” spin-off after three seasons.
The announcement also comes ahead of the show’s now series finale which will air on May 6th. Whilst it doesn’t leave on a cliffhanger, the episode wasn’t designed as a series finale and includes a tease for what was to come.
The series was on the bubble, but the decision reportedly came down to the wire and ultimately it was decided not to renew or greenlight an abbreviated fourth and final season.
It shows how much linear network broadcast has changed as “NCIS: Hawai’i” was the #12 most watched non-sports program on broadcast and averages 7.8 million linear viewers along with 10 million in Live+35 multi-platform viewing.
It also follows the network scrapping “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas” also last Friday.
The franchise has shown no signs of slowing down with “NCIS: Sydney” looking likely to get a second season, “NCIS: Origins” to debut this Fall, a Tony and Ziva spinoff in the works, and the flagship series already renewed for a twenty-second season.
The network is committed to multiple new scripted series for next season including “Matlock,” “Watson,” “Poppa’s House” and a “Young Sheldon” spin-off on the way.
