“Avengers: Endgame” co-director Joe Russo has confirmed that he will once again write the script and serve as a producer on a third film in the Chris Hemsworth-led “Extraction” franchise.
The “Thor” star played Australian black ops mercenary Tyler Rake in the 2020 first film which received mixed reviews but became the most-watched original film in Netflix’s history – reaching over 99 million viewers during the first four weeks.
A sequel was greenlit and aired in June 2023 which received better critical reviews. Viewership numbers however were not revealed.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Russo says they are “developing it at the moment” and figuring out when they could do it depending upon Hemsworth’s schedule. He also confirms Sam Hargrave is back directing:
“It’s an interesting franchise because he’s a very emotionally wounded character, so there’s good storytelling there I think in respect to his backstory, and, you know, his relationship to violence is one that’s built around self-loathing and guilt. And so, it adds a lot of texture I think, which allows us to tell more stories about him. “
The second film was originally slated to be shot in Sydney, Australia before shifting to a European locale for a story that made full use of that locale. Where a third film will shoot is unclear.
Joe’s brother Anthony also produces the film through their AGBO banner.
