Veteran art director and production designer Ray Chan, who worked on plenty of Marvel‘s biggest films of the past decade, has died. Marvel Studios themselves revealed the news in a released statement.
Chan began his relationship with them a decade ago with “Thor: The Dark World” as a supervising art director. He served in that capacity on “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Doctor Strange,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.
He also served as art director on “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and then production designer on “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier,” the reshoots of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” and the upcoming “Deadpool & Wolverine”.
TMZ is reporting that Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds is “gutted about the sudden loss – and that it hits close to home for him”. Statements included below:
Ryan Reynolds: “As valuable a creative force on Deadpool & Wolverine as the writers, director and stars…He built worlds from scratch – and did so in the most collaborative and inclusive ways. Ray was peerless.”
Shawn Levy: “The loss of Ray is devastating to all of us who worked on Deadpool & Wolverine. Ray did more than design the world of our movie; he lit up the world around him. Truly, anyone who knew Ray, or was lucky enough to collaborate with him as we were, experienced this beacon of a man… He will be deeply missed but forever remembered.”
Kevin Feige: “Ray was first and foremost a good friend to everyone at Marvel Studios. He was a talented collaborator who brought creativity and attention to detail to every frame of every movie he worked on, and who was able to bring out the best in each department he worked with.”
Chan also worked with many filmmakers like Ridley Scott, Michael Apted, Alfonso Cuarón, Ed Zwick, James Mangold and Antoine Fuqua with his non-Marvel work including “Children of Men,” “National Treasure,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” “Alien vs. Predator,” “Nanny McPhee,” “Blood Diamond,” “Knight and Day,” “Robin Hood,” and “Wrath of the Titans”.
He was nominated for an Art Director’s Guild Award five times, winning twice. Chan is survived by his wife, Lindsay, and his children, Caspar and Sebastian.
