Stranger Things has been a streaming phenomenon. It came out of absolutely nowhere in the depths of 2016 and became a massive hit, in the process launching the careers of Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard, among others.
During seasons one and two, Stranger Things averaged ratings of around 14.07 million adults between the ages of 18 and 49 in the United States. This made it the third most-watched season of Netflix original content in the U.S. at the time. By the time the third season rolled, those figures had jumped to 40.7 million households and smashed previous streaming records.
It is now coming to an end and there is a famous director in tow. Darabont had quietly slipped into retirement a few years ago, but he has unretired himself, according to a report from The Insneider.
Darabont (The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption) has apparently directed two episodes of the final season of Stranger Things. This is said to be the third and fifth episodes, titled The Turbow Trap and Shock Jock.
Darabont was wrapped up in legal battles following his exit from AMC’s The Walking Dead. That has also gone on to be a phenomenon. Darabont ultimately settles for $200 million.
The rest of the episodes will either be directed by The Duffer Brothers themselves, or producer Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine). It has also been rumored that Dan Trachtenberg will also direct at least one episode but that is not confirmed.
The final season of Stranger Things is expected on Netflix in 2025.
