The highly-acclaimed Luca Guadagnino-directed tennis drama “Challengers” starring Zendaya and Josh O’Connor, earned $1.9 million in previews and advanced screenings on Thursday.
The sports film is expected to land $15 million domestically during its first weekend on the big screen, below the originally predicted $20 million.
Budgeted at $50 million, the film has been heavily marketed in recent weeks and already began its international rollout last weekend.
Meanwhile David Leitch’s “The Fall Guy” has already begun its cinema rollout internationally this weekend, and will launch domestically next Friday.
THR reports that with one week to go, the film projections are currently tracking for a domestic $35 million opening – less than expected for a film that’s budgeted at $125 million to produce.
Universal Pictures has been heavily marketing the film which has been landing good reviews and reportedly needs a worldwide gross of at least $300 million to break even.
So it will need strong overseas revenue to be profitable, and the early numbers this weekend (which aren’t in yet) will tell the tale of how well it will fare on that front.
