Multiple Emmy winner Julia Garner (“Ozark”) will star opposite Josh Brolin in “Barbarian” filmmaker Zach Cregger’s new horror feature “Weapons” at New Regency.
Cregger wrote the top-secret script, which has been dubbed an “interrelated, multistory horror epic that tonally is in the vein of Magnolia.” Filming on the project is set to begin mid-May in Atlanta.
Garner recently was hired to star as an incarnation of Silver Surfer in Marvel Studios’ “Fantastic Four” alongside Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic/Reed Richards. Pascal was originally set for the main role in “Weapons,” but scheduling issues led to him pulling out and being replaced by Brolin back in February.
The film was the subject of a major bidding war last year as Hollywood studios and streamers fought to work with Cregger. The project will also mark Brolin’s first true horror film.
Much of the producing team on “Barbarian” is back for this including Roy Lee, J.D. Lifshitz, Raphael Margules and Miri Yoon. “Barbarian” pulled in $45 million at the box-office – ten times its production budget – along with earning glowing reviews.
Garner is currently filming Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man” film alongside Christopher Abbott and will soon star in the psychological thriller “Apartment 7A” at Paramount.
