Marking the first big screen incarnation of Green Lantern since Ryan Reynolds’ disastrous 2011 film, Nathan Fillion will play the Guy Gardner incarnation of the character in James Gunn’s currently filming “Superman” film.
It marks a re-teaming of Fillion and Gunn who’ve worked together several times. Speaking with Collider recently to promote the second season of the Disney-Pixar series “Monsters at Work,” Fillion spoke about taking on the role.
He confirmed he was at the premiere party for “The Suicide Squad” when Gunn came up to him and told him “you’re gonna be Guy Gardner”. After praising Gunn and his work, Fillion was asked why he felt suited to play this version of Green Lantern.
He explains the Guy Gardner incarnation has all sorts of dimensionality to it that a more straightforward hero role often doesn’t which allows him to play with things:
“The reality is that people have flaws. We all have quirks. We all have vulnerabilities. You could have the most wonderful family, but be like, ‘Oh, my God, my dad drives me nuts. He’s got this one thing.’
Everybody’s got something, and I love to lean into those faults and flaws. It’s what makes people real and what allows audiences to relate, because we all know what that is. We all have our own. We witness it in other people.
Guy Gardner is 90% flawed and doesn’t care. That’s one of his flaws. I think there’s a real freedom in playing that. So, for a guy who likes to play flaws and flawed people, Guy Gardner is a gold mine.”
Fillion will be in Atlanta filming scenes for the “Superman” film in between his commitments to “The Rookie” series which is currently in the midst of airing its sixth season.
