Marvel Studios’ revival of “X-Men: The Animated Series” with “X-Men ’97” has been an outstanding success for the streamer, chalking up some of the best reviews of the year so far across any TV series.
Fans are loving it and, unsurprisingly, have been asking all those involved various questions about how they pulled it off and any future plans for the franchise.
Many of the answers are expected – are the team behind it keen to return for more seasons beyond the planned three? Sure. Would they do a movie version? Yes. Would they like to be involved in the live-action “X-Men” films when they eventuate? You bet.
Director Emi Yonemura however had an interesting answer though in a recent interview with Inverse where she revealed that Marvel head Kevin Feige at one time considered making the show part of the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe:
“That has always been something we know was on Kevin Feige’s mind, ‘Do we make this part of the MCU? Do we not make this part of the MCU?. It’s actually gone back and forth quite a few times, and I think we did land in a smart place because [X-Men: The Animated Series] was its own thing, and I think that to continue it, we needed to be our own thing.”
Could this eventually be established as taking place on one of the other Earths within the multiverse? We’ll see. Either way, Marvel seems happy for the show to do its own thing right now.
The “X-Men ’97” production team is already at work on a second season whilst a third season seems to be in the earliest planning stages as well.
