Hasbro Entertainment, Sony‘s TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television have closed a deal for the film and TV rights for the beloved board game “Clue”.
News of Hasbro shopping around the rights broke back in February, with all studios bar Apple said to be interested. Ultimately it seems Sony won. Hasbro Heads of Film and TV Zev Foreman and Gabriel Marano say in a statement:
“Sony is the perfect partner to adapt a property as culturally impactful and mystery-defining as ‘Clue’. Nicole Brown, Katherine Pope, and their teams are tremendous creative collaborators and ideal partners to help us figure out after 75 years if it was Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with the candlestick.”
This marks the latest attempt at reviving the property for the screen following six years ago by actor Ryan Reynolds who was considering producing a new live-action film. An animated TV series adaptation for the FOX network was also planned back in 2021.
The game, also known as “Cluedo” in some markets, sees players untangling various clues to determine who among a party’s six guests – Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green and Mrs. White (more recently changed to Chef White) – killed the host Mr. Boddy, with what lethal weapon they did it, and in which room of the large manor in which the killing was done.
The property was previously adapted for the big screen in 1985 into what’s now considered a true cult classic of the comedy genre which has earned a massive following over the years and generated countless memes. Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn, Christopher Lloyd, Michael McKean, Martin Mull, Lesley Ann Warren and Eileen Brennan starred.
