This week sees the release of the “Sonic the Hedgehog” spin-off TV series “Knuckles,” a six-episode series that serves as a side-quel to the two live-action/CG-hybrid films based on the property.

Should it prove successful, and judging from the numbers for the trailers it likely will be, it’s expected to lead to more from the franchise beyond the main movies.

Filmmaker Jeff Fowler, who directed “Knuckles” and the “Sonic” films, told Discussing Film at the show’s premiere that the “sky’s the limit” on more potential spin-offs like “Knuckles”.

He adds: “It’s a wonderful question to ask, ‘who else could get a show?’ And we’d love to do it.”

So which characters could get one? Producer Toby Ascher, speaking with Screen Rant prior to release, says the introduction of characters from the games comes down to the story and which ones suit the story they’re telling. Whatever the case, no character is off the table:

“I think we talk a lot about how the different characters in the Sonic universe fit into the movie and television franchise. I think it’s about trying to find the right spots for them as we move forward. I don’t think there’s a character in the Sonic world that isn’t being discussed right now, and how they could fit in into the future, which is really exciting.”

Pachacamac the Echidna (voiced by Christopher Lloyd) from the second film will return in the upcoming “Knuckles” TV series, whilst the third “Sonic” film later this year will finally bring Shadow to the screen as voiced by Keanu Reeves.

“Knuckles” launches on Paramount+ on April 26th.
