By Over a span of around eight years now, actor/filmmaker Mel Gibson and his “Braveheart” screenwriter Randall Wallace have been working together on the script for the sequel to Gibson’s 2004 film “The Passion of the Christ”.
Now Wallace himself has offered a new update as part of an interview with OMRI. He tells the outlet that the screenplay is finished, Jim Caviezel is returning as Jesus, and filming aims to begin soon:
“I ran into Mel just a couple of nights ago, we were talking about ‘when is this going to happen’ and I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag too early, but I think it’s coming very soon.”
The reasoning for the delay ties to the script with as many as six different drafts written – two of which are under consideration as the official shooting script even as both are said to be quite different.
Locations in Mexico and Rome have also already reportedly been rented out for the film which isn’t expected to be as linear as the original.
Gibson similarly looked ready to start filming on the project early last year, but at that time called it off for more rewrites. He most recently shot “Flight Risk” alongside Mark Wahlberg as that film’s lead star.
