One of the most interesting character actors out there over the years, Brad Dourif, has indicated he’s effectively retired from acting – with one notable exception.
The now 74-year-old Dourif made his debut in Milos Forman’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and landed a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his work there. Ever since he’s been a go-to actor for genre films and has essentially never been out of work since.
Spanning film and television, he’s best known for his roles in like Grima Wormtongue in “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” Amos ‘Doc’ Cochran in HBO’s “Deadwood,” the Gemini Killer in “The Exorcist III,” Ensign Suder in “Star Trek: Voyager,” and key supporting parts in films like “Alien Resurrection,” “Dune,” “Blue Velvet,” “Mississippi Burning,” “Heaven’s Gate,” “Graveyard Shift,” “Murder in the First,” “Urban Legend,” “Halloween” and more.
However his most famous role is mostly offscreen, providing the voice of the homicidal Chucky doll in the “Child’s Play” films and the “Chucky” TV series on SyFy and the USA Network.
In an interview with JoBlo, they indicate Dourif has decided to retire from acting with the exception being the Chucky role which he has no plans to abandon. Their correspondent says:
“Dourif said that he’s retired from acting. The only reason he came back for the show was because of his daughter Fiona and he considers Chucky creator Don Mancini to be family. But for non-Chucky stuff, he considers himself retired.”
Dourif has played the Chucky role across seven films, not including his “Ready Player One” cameo. “Chucky” is in the midst of its third season with Mancini having already pitched a fourth season and a new film that ties in.
