Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley are being eyed to take three of four leading roles in “The Thursday Murder Club” feature at Amblin Partners.
The project sees the return of filmmaker Chris Columbus, the director of iconic classics like “Gremlins,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Home Alone,” “The Goonies,” “Adventures in Babysitting” and the first two “Harry Potter” films.
This will be an adaptation of Richard Osman’s 2020 novel of the same name and follows four septuagenarian friends who live in a retirement community and solve cold cases for fun.
When a shady property developer is found dead, the four find themselves in the middle of their first live crime.
The novel spawned a successful series of books which have sold over 10 million copies globally. Osman himself is best known for his creation and co-presenting of game shows on British television such as “Pointless”.
Amblin secured the rights to the property in a fierce auction that attracted fourteen bidders. The company is coming off the success of “Masters of the Air” for the Apple TV+ service.
Ol Parker (“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again”) was previously attached to direct the project.
