Filmmaker Stephan Elliott has confirmed to Deadline that thirty years after his celebrated cult classic “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” was released, a sequel is on the way.
Elliott indicates Terence Stamp, Guy Pearce and Hugo Weaving are back ‘on board’ for the film which will involve “one helluva journey” that kicks off in Australia.
Elliott says he’s: “got a script that everybody likes, we’re still working out deals. … It’s happening… The bottom line is that I’ve just had everybody to the table and we’re hammering out the deal now just so everybody’s happy.”
The original followed a transsexual and two drag queens who set off on a journey from Sydney to Darwin in an old-school bus to perform disco numbers. It remains one of Australia’s most celebrated and widely popular films of the era.
Elliott had been toying with a sequel for years, but the death of his parents galvanised him and helped him realise he had a story to write.
The now grown-up son of Weaving’s character will feature in the film along with “a bunch of new characters to support a new generation.”
Songs will blend old disco classics with more contemporary numbers. The aim is to shoot this year.
