After 40 years, the Sundance Film Festival may be leaving its signature home of Park City, Utah in time for its 2027 edition.

According to The Playlist, acting CEO Amanda Kelso and Festival Director Eugene Hernandez have reached out to the community to inform them that a process to potentially relocate the festival was underway.

Additionally, a Request for Information (RFI) for potential new cities is open until May 1st with cities, towns, and municipalities interested in hosting the festival able to reach out to express their interest and get more information from the Institute.

The festival has specifically asked the State of Utah to submit a proposal, suggesting they likely don’t want to move far. An announcement on a new location is expected no later than the first quarter of 2025.

Both the 2025 and 2026 editions of the festival will still take place in Park City and Salt Lake City with the majority of events in the former.

The reasoning for the move is likely tied to funding as film festivals without substantial government funding are struggling to survive in an era with less corporate sponsorship. In recent years, SXSW in Austin has generated more buzz from its screenings than Sundance.

The 2025 edition is scheduled to run from January 23rd-February 2nd.
