Following its revamp to incorporate Hulu into its U.S. interface, the Disney+ app could soon add a feature more akin to cable television – always-on channels.
The Information published the report, saying the channels are reportedly similar to those on free ad-supported streaming services like Pluto or Tubi and would be dedicated to things like “Star Wars” and “Marvel” shows and films, as well as potentially classic Disney animated and Pixar films.
Even though viewers would need a Disney Plus subscription to tune in to the channels, they will also likely contain ads like traditional television.
This reflects both Disney’s goal of keeping viewers glued to its app, and fitting the growing popularity of free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST).
Rival Amazon houses always-on channels within its FAST service Freevee, but anyone can watch that service without a subscription whereas Disney+ will require one.
There aren’t any further details regarding when the new channels might launch and how many there will be initially.
