Alex Garland’s dystopian thriller “Civil War” topped the U.S. box-office with $25.7 million, the first A24 movie to top the box-office in North America and an opening weekend record for them.
The film reportedly overperformed in California and Texas locations, two states that are behind the successionist movement in the film itself.
“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” fell to second with $15.4 million in its third weekend – it now stands at a total domestic gross of $157.9 million, and a worldwide total of $436 million.
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” was third with $5.3 million, but it has only earned $96 million domestically and $160 million worldwide to date – not a good result considering its cost.
Faring better are “Kung Fu Panda 4” in fourth with $5.2 million and “Dune: Part Two” in fifth with $4.3 million – bringing their worldwide totals to $452 million and $683 million respectively.
“Monkey Man” fell to sixth domestically with $4.1 million, a second weekend drop of 59%. “The First Omen” was seventh with $3.8 million, a second weekend drop of 54%. Also of note was the “Shrek” re-release which generated little interest and debuted to a soft $1.35 million in ninth place.
