By The long-running feud between “Fast and Furious” stars Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel seemed to hit a détente last year when Johnson made a surprise cameo as Luke Hobbs in the “Fast X” credits.
The pair’s falling out went viral in 2016 after Johnson called out a co-star on Instagram with disparaging comments seemingly referring to Diesel. Diesel, for his part, says he gave ‘tough love’ to The Rock to try and get a great performance out of him.
Either way, Johnson leapt from the main franchise to the “Hobbs and Shaw” spin-off and sat out “F9” – suggesting they had reached an impasse.
Diesel publicly extended an olive branch in late 2021 inviting Johnson back which seemed to be declined at the time with Johnson saying: “no chance I would return”
On the sidelines of all this was co-star John Cena who came aboard the franchise with “F9” playing the estranged brother of Diesel’s character. The actor recently appeared on the Armchair Expert podcast (via People) where host Dax Shepard about the feud. Cena says:
“There’s certainly rumors about that. I can’t deny that. You have two very alpha, driven people. You get two, there can only be one.
You gotta remember I got dropped into a locker room where [we have] generational vets. ‘What’d your dad do?’ ‘Wrestle.’ ‘What’d your granddad do?’ ‘Wrestle.’ I’ve been in that environment; know the room and just kind of adapt to what’s going on.
I’m being invited into someone’s home, into someone’s family. And regardless of how they look physically in comparison to another human being, this is one IP that has had nine installments and it’s an action movie – that’s rarefied air. At the very least, there has to be respect for that.
I’m not trying to get the sandbox. That’s not my thing. I’m grateful for what you’ve given me, I just want to be the best firetruck I can.”
Cena himself had a feud with Johnson over the latter exiting WWE to become an actor – the career Cena eventually took. As a result he admits his own feud with Johnson was “short-sighted and selfish”.
The eleventh and final “Fast” movie is slated for release April 4th 2025 by Universal Pictures.
