Paramount+ giveth and taketh away.
The streaming giant has renewed “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for a fourth season, the order coming in well ahead of the show’s third season which is currently in production and not expected to air until 2025.
At the same time however, the previously announced fifth season of the animated comedy “Star Trek: Lower Decks” has been confirmed to be the show’s last. That season, currently in production, will see new episodes arrive this fall.
Showrunner Mike McMahan and franchise producer Alex Kurtzman issued the following joint statement:
“To the fans, We wanted to let you know that this fall will be the fifth and final season of ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’. While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.
Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we’ve built, and more than anything we all love love love Star Trek. We’re excited for the world to see our hilarious fifth season which we’re working on right now, and the good news is that all previous episodes will remain on Paramount+ so there is still so much to look forward to as we celebrate the Cerritos crew with a big send-off.”
Jack Quaid, Tawny Newsome, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore and Gillian Vigman lent their voices to the animated series.
The news comes as “Star Trek: Discovery” is in the midst of its fifth and final season run, the film “Star Trek: Section 31” has wrapped production, and a “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” series begins production later this year.
