Rising star Glen Powell, hot off the success of “Anyone But You,” is set to team with filmmaker Edgar Wright for a new adaptation of the 1982 Stephen King novel “The Running Man”.
Penned under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, the novel was set in 2025 in an America under a totalitarian regime that uses violent game shows to placate the disenfranchised masses.
One desperate man, needing money for his sick daughter, joins the most popular show in which teams of killers hunt down contestants. The longer one survives, the more money that person makes.
But as the game show’s producers and killers will find out, this desperate man will break all the rules and expose the show’s dark secrets.
The property was previously adapted to the big screen in 1987 as an action vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Wright has been attached to the project since 2021 and will produce alongside Nira Parkl and Simon Kinberg. He co-wrote the new script with Michael Bacall.
Powell had a major public breakout turn with his Hangman role in “Top Gun: Maverick” and will be seen this year in both Richard Linklater’s acclaimed action-comedy “Hitman” on Netflix in June, and Universal’s “Twisters” film in July.
