HBO is no longer developing its planned “Game of Thrones” spin-off sequel series centering around Kit Harington’s Jon Snow character.
Harington himself broke the news today whilst out promoting his new film “Blood for Dust” which hits cinemas and digital on April 19th.
Speaking with Screen Rant, he says the series was in development but he rarely spoke about it because the status of the show was never truly set:
“I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development. I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed.
I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.”
Well, it seems they did explore various possibilities and have come to the decision that there isn’t a good enough story to tell to make it worth developing:
“Currently, it’s not [worth pursuing]. Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough.
So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
HBO has been developing multiple spin-off series since ‘Thrones’ finished a few years ago, including the already aired “House of the Dragon” and the currently casting up “Hedge Knight” series.
