Producer Toby Ascher, who works on the “Sonic the Hedgehog” film franchise, says the franchise’s goal is to build up to “Avengers-level events”.
The jump to the big screen for “Sonic” has been fast – the first one releasing in 2020, the second in 2022. Later this month a “Knuckles” spin-off TV series debuts on Paramount+ whilst the films continue with “Sonic 3” later this year.
Speaking with Paste Magazine to promote “Knuckles,” Ascher indicates that we can expect more TV and film entries should they continue to perform well:
“We got really excited about the idea of expanding our characters in our world into television, specifically, because it gives us a platform to really do character studies.
We knew that, with Shadow coming into ‘Sonic 3’ and some of the bigger things that we want to do, the Sonic franchise on the movie side is going to be these Avengers-level events.
They’re going to be these big, exciting stories that have a lot of different characters. And so what television did for us is it gave us time to go into some of the more supporting characters in depth and really build them out in cool ways.”
Ascher also spoke about the “Knuckles” series which consists of six episodes and launches in just over two weeks. The series follows Knuckles as he agrees to train Wade (Adam Pally) as his protégé and teach him the ways of the Echidna warrior. Ascher says:
“We thought we could translate that into a full series. I think it’s by far the funniest version we’ve had in any of the Sonic movies so far. It leans into weird comedy partially because of Adam Pally and because of what Idris brings in a really great way.”
Paramount+ has shared a brand new video to promote the series which you can see below. Meanwhile, the third “Sonic” film will open in cinemas on December 20th.
