Filmmaker John Waters says that his next movie, “Liarmouth,” is having enough issues with funding he’s not sure if it’ll get made.

The 77-year-old queer icon and helmer of such films as “Serial Mom,” “Pink Flamingos,” the original “Hairspray” and “Cry-Baby,” hasn’t made a scripted feature film since the NC-17-rated 2004 flop “A Dirty Shame.”

He has worked on plenty of other projects in the interim and often shows up on talk shows and other places to the point he remains instantly identifiable to many, even if they’re not familiar with his films.

Answering fan questions to a packed audience at an event in Los Angeles this past weekend (via Variety, Waters touched upon some of the upcoming projects he’s been attached to over the years.

“My last film was 20 years ago, but I’ve been paid to write six other ones in that time. Four different sequels to Hairspray; Fruitcake, which has gone through a couple of versions that still might happen; and Liarmouth.”

The latter is based on his own 2022 novel and at last report Aubrey Plaza was linked to star in the lead role of compulsive kleptomaniac Marsha Sprinkle. Waters confirms Plaza’s casting but says the film currently doesn’t have enough funding to get made:

“The book was optioned. I turned in the script. They like the script, but we don’t have the money to make it. I’m thrilled that [Plaza is] going to [star in it], but we don’t have the money yet. I don’t know what’s going to happen, and so I’m trying to get Fruitcake going too. We’ll see.”

“Fruitcake” has been described as a Christmas movie and had both Johnny Knoxville and Parker Posey set to star at one point.
