Colin Farrell had already spoken about The Penguin, warning viewers not to expect a superhero adventure, and saying it brings the violence. While talking about his new Apple TV+ show, Sugar, he was asked again about The Penguin and doubled down.

In an interview with HeyUGuys, and reported by Dark Horizons, he said there is no doubt how this would be rated if The Penguin was released in theaters:
“Tons of violence, abject darkness and a man at great struggle to try and claw his way to the top of the power vacuum that was created at the end of The Batman film you know with the death of Carmine Falcone there’s a power grab in Gotham now.
It’s dark man. Lauren LeFranc wrote, with her room of writers and she was the showrunner, she wrote eight extraordinary episodes of story. I mean just really, really bold stuff. I couldn’t believe that it got as dark as it gets so that’s what to expect. It would be a hard R I think if it was in the cinemas.”
The spin-off from Matt Reeves’ The Batman starts exactly where that movie left off. Carmine Falcone (Jon Turturro) is dead and parts of Gotham City are still flooded. In the carnage, a fight for control of Gotham’s underworld breaks out as The Penguin (Colin Farrell), Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), and mob boss Salvatore Maroni (Clancy Brown) battle for control.
Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O’Connell, Carmen Ejogo, François Chau, Theo Rossi, and David H. Holmes co-star in The Penguin, which is expected on Max later this year.
