Chevy Chase was fired from Community during its fourth season after he used a racial slur on set. The famous comic actor and Saturday Night Live alum was then accused of other disruptive on-set behaviors. Because of this, when talk of a Community movie was floated, it was assumed he would not be part of it.
Now, in an interview with The Post, show lead Joel McHale was asked about Chase coming back for the movie:
“I don’t think he’s allowed to [return]. I don’t think it would happen. I don’t think it is a thing. Obviously his unceremonious departure in Season 4 pretty much did that in. I’m guessing if you asked him, he wouldn’t be interested.”
He confirmed the movie is definitely happening, and now it is just a scheduling issue:
“I know that we’ve been saying stuff about it. But we have a budget. We are going to do it – it’s just getting the date and lining everybody up. It’s going to happen. I was 50/50, less than 50/50 a couple years ago. But now, it’s real. So we just have to get the dates down.”
Set at a community college in the fictional Colorado town of Greendale, the series starred an ensemble cast including McHale and Chase, with Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover, Ken Jeong, and Jim Rash.
It makes use of meta-humor and pop culture references, paying homage to film and television clichés and tropes. Showrunner Dan Harmon based Community on his experiences attending Glendale Community College.
The series ran for 110 episodes over six seasons, with its first five seasons airing on NBC from September 17, 2009, to April 17, 2014, and its final season airing on Yahoo! Screen from March 17 to June 2, 2015.
The Community movie will be released on Peacock when it arrives.
