A new Photo has been released from “Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires” (“Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios”), the new Max animated feature offering a period spin on the Dark Knight.
Announced mid-2022, the original, Spanish-language animated film places the iconic DC superhero against the backdrop of Aztec Mexico and marks the first ever collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd (“Spree”), Anima (“Legend Quest”) and Chatrone (“The Book of Life”).
The story follows a young boy, Yohualli Coatl (Horacio Garcia Rojas), whose father and village leader Toltecatzin is murdered by the Spanish Conquistadors. Coatl flees to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of looming danger.
Using the temple of the bat god Tzinacan as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant Acatzin. He develops equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma’s temple, and avenge his father’s death.
Produced entirely in Mexico, the project has Mesoamerican studies expert Alejandro Diaz Barriga working closely with the creative team to make certain that the indigenous representation portrayed in the film is appropriate and relevant.
Juan Meza-Leon (“Harley Quinn”) directs the feature, while Jose C. García de Letona, Fernando De Fuentes, Aaron D. Berger and Carina Schulze serve as producers.
