Michael Fassbender is reportedly in negotiations to star in the George Clooney-directed espionage thriller series “The Department” at Smokehouse Pictures, MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios.
The project is a reimagining of Eric Rochant’s French spy series “The Bureau” for Canal+ which starred Matthieu Kassovitz.
That show followed Guillaume Debailly, a member of a clandestine branch of the French Secret Services (DGSE) who returns home after a six-year undercover mission in Damascus.
Debailly struggles to let go of his false identity and an illicit affair with a Syrian woman, but soon finds himself caught up in a game between the DGSE and the CIA.
The series dealt with current geopolitical issues and delved deep into the psychology of those who do this sort of work.
Clooney’s version is set to start shooting in London this spring and has already landed a straight-to-series order at Showtime.
Keith Cox, Nina L. Diaz, David Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, Alex Berger, Ashley Stern, Pascal Breton and Bob Yari all executive produce.
