The Independent Spirit Awards took place this afternoon on a tent on a beach in Santa Monica, and the ceremony faced issues thanks to a sole male Israel-Hamas war protestor playing a prerecorded message over a loudspeaker on the outer part of the ceremony’s barricade.

The chant was heard repeatedly throughout the ceremony, blaring out many of the presenters and winners onstage with some of the host and presenters commenting on it.

Several people, including security and producers, reportedly approached the protestor but he didn’t stop. Things went so far as a shuttle bus being parked in front of the protestors to try to muffle the sound.

The ceremony continued nonetheless with Celine Song’s “Past Lives” winning the top honors of best film and director. “American Fiction” won for best lead performance (Jeffrey Wright) and best screenplay, and “The Holdovers won for best supporting performance (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), best breakthrough performance (Dominic Sessa) and best cinematography.

“Anatomy of a Fall” won best international film, “Four Daughters” won best documentary, “A Thousand and One” won best first feature, “May December” won best first screenplay, and “How to Blow Up a Pipeline” won best editing.

On the TV front, “Beef” took best TV series and best lead performance (Ali Wong), whilst “The Last of Us” took best supporting performance (Nick Offerman) and best breakthrough performance (Keivonn Montreal Woodard). “Dear Mama” won best new docuseries.
